What are constructed wetlands/reed bed systems?
Constructed wetlands/reed bed systems are a natural means of treating wastewater where
grounds may not be favorable for the development of a traditional percolation area.
Constructed wetlands are purpose built wetlands which are specially designed for the treatment
of wastewater. A carefully chosen selection of plants and a specially designed substrate
provide the right biological environment for cleansing and reoxygenating of wastewater.
Constructed wetlands and reed bed systems are less costly than many other conventional means of
effluent treatment, have lower running costs and can produce significant results for sites that may not
be initially suitable for on-site wastewater treatment. They can be used for a wide variety of applications
including farm runoff, slurry effluent, domestic and municipal wastewater, urban storm water, landfill
leachate and many industrial wastewaters.
